I love watching funny and dramatic TV shows – but sometimes, I’m after something a little more interesting or educational like a documentary.

Documentaries are a great way to learn about a new topic in a fun way, including everything from nature to sports. Unlike reading a book or doing a bit of research, documentaries are an accessible way for anyone to understand a different subject in a film or series format.

In this blog post, I’ve put together 5 great documentaries to check out in Summer. I hope you find an exciting pick for your next watch!

1. ‘Fyre’

This documentary tells the story of the disastrous Fyre Festival in 2017 – the incredible music festival that never happened.

Billy McFarland and his business associates promised to hold an amazing music festival in the Bahamas, and hundreds of celebrities and influencers advertised the event. It was an event for the uber-rich, including festival packages that cost up to $25,000 per ticket.

However, there was a terrible mismanagement of money, set-up and marketing – meaning the “dream” festival that was promised actually turned into a nightmare.

You can check out this fascinating documentary on Netflix, including interviews with people involved in the festival.

2. ‘Planet Earth II’

This documentary series is an incredible look at how animals survive in the wild, including the challenges they face every day. Episodes cover topics such as island animals, wildlife up in the mountains and jungle creatures!

It’s incredible to follow all of these amazing animals, and no nature documentary would be complete without David Attenborough’s presentation and narration. You can watch ‘Planet Earth II’ on BBC iPlayer.

3. ‘Chasing Coral’

This documentary looks at the world’s coral reefs, focusing on why they’re vanishing so fast. During this documentary, divers, photographers and scientists reveal exactly what is happening to the coral reefs in our oceans.

Between 2014-2017, coral experienced one of the worst bleaching events in history due to climate change – and the documentary raises awareness for what will happen if we don’t look after our world.

You can watch ‘Chasing Coral‘ on Netflix this Summer to understand more about this important issue.

4. ‘The Barkley Marathons’

The Barkley Marathons are intense races in Tennessee, created to test the physical and mental endurance of some of the best athletes.

These crazy marathons were created by Lazarus Lake, and they have a secret application process, unknown start times and they even include dangerous terrain.

This documentary takes a look at these unusual races for the first time. It is the perfect combination of humour and inspiration for Summer!

5. ‘Our Planet’

Available on Netflix, this documentary is a ground-breaking look at nature across the world. This documentary series covers important issues such as conservation, climate change and survival in the wild.

Like ‘Planet Earth II’, David Attenborough also narrates this incredible nature documentary.

‘Our Planet II’ is coming out in June, so this is the perfect time to catch up on all the action!

Have you watched any of these documentaries? Let me know your recommendations in the comments!

Take care everyone x
