Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us have spent more time at home or indoors than ever before. While this was a necessary act to help keep each other safe, it also means that any exercise and fitness plans were put on hold (or abandoned altogether). However, while this is a perfectly acceptable side-effect of a global pandemic (and you shouldn’t feel in any way guilty), there are certain steps you can take to help you get back on track – whether you are looking to improve your fitness levels or lose a little weight.

For example, there are plenty of truly enjoyable ways to get moving out there – many of which can give you the confidence you need to jump up from your sofa and get back into exercise. With that in mind, here are four fitness activities that everyone should try at least once.

Yoga

Participating in a yoga session, whether you follow an online tutorial or attend an in-person class, is a great way to get fit and can also help relieve anxiety and stress. Yoga is a great workout as it:

  • Clears your mind and helps you focus.
  • Improves your core strength, balance, and flexibility.
  • Eases joint and muscle pain.
  • Helps you to relax and sleep better.

Rugby

Many of us are used to watching rugby union games on our TV- but signing up for a local team is actually a great way to have fun, meet new people and get fit while doing so. In fact, many weight loss programs encourage participants to get involved in team sports as they are a great way to hold themselves accountable. Furthermore, rugby is also a great workout as it:

  • Improves your speed and agility.
  • Enhances your mental clarity and ability to focus.
  • Provides you with a healthy outlet for stress.
  • Puts your full body to work.

Walking

Many people mistakenly believe that there are no real benefits to walking – however, walking for at least thirty minutes every day can have a truly transformative effect on your health. For example, walking between 6,000 and 10,00 steps a day:

  • Increases your overall fitness levels, helping you advance into more intense workouts.
  • Encourages you to spend more time outdoors, which increases the amount of serotonin your body produces
  • Significantly reduces feelings of stress and anxiety
  • Reduces joint pain and help you reintroduce exercise into your routine after an injury
  • Strengthens your muscles.

Cycling

Cycling is another great exercise for those looking to improve their fitness levels. However, while returning to cycling after a long period of inactivity may seem daunting – it’s important to remember that you never forget how to ride a bike. Within a few minutes, you’ll feel as though you never stopped. There are many health benefits associated with cycling. For example, it:

  • Increases your strength and endurance levels
  • Presents you with a healthy challenge as you gradually increase the distance and intensity of your journey
  • Decreases feelings of stress and anxiety while increasing your focus levels

I really want to get back to walking. My treadmill has just been sitting around. I lost motivation because I think I was looking for fast results in weight loss, forgetting that while I get there, exercise has many other benefits. Usually in the winter I liven up the cold days with exercise 🙂

I love walking and cycling! I have tried yoga but was not for me. I am more of a pilates person. Rugby, I don’t even know how this game is played but I guess since you suggest it it will definately be beneficial 🙂
