Summer can be an expensive time for families, especially when the kids break up from school. You want to enjoy time together as a family – but that can be hard when you’re trying to save money.

However, there are a few ways to spend time with your friends and family without breaking the bank. It’s all about finding small but effective ways to make the most of your budget.

In this blog post, I’ve put together 5 top tips to save money in the Summer holidays. I hope it helps you plan and prepare for a fun Summer with your little ones.

1. Plan your meals in advance

If you want to save money in the Summer holidays, planning your meals in advance is a must!

This might mean creating a strict shopping list (and sticking to it) or batch cooking your food. There are so many money-saving tricks when it comes to cooking for your family.

Although you might find yourself spending a little more with more people at home, planning out your meals, snacks and treats can save lots of money – and it can also encourage you to eat at home, instead of going out for food.

You could also choose meals that don’t use as much energy, such as salads. Choose no-cook meals to create a refreshing treat for everyone – and save on your energy bills a little bit.

2. Stay close to home

Although it’s great to go on holiday during the Summer holidays, there’s nothing wrong with staying close to home. I think it’s easy to forget that there are fun things to do in your local area. Visit your local museum, go for a walk through the park, look out for local events, meet up with friends for a pub trip or organise a picnic.

Making the most of local attractions can save so much money. You won’t be driving anywhere or spending money on train tickets – and you can keep the kids entertained without travelling too far. You could also walk or get the bus whenever you can, as petrol costs can soon rack up.

3. Pack your lunch

If you and your family are going out for the day, pack your lunch instead of buying food on the go. This will be so much cheaper, and it can help you stay healthy, too.

Food and drinks can be so expensive when you’re out and about, especially if there are a few people eating. Although there’s nothing wrong with treating yourself, preparing your lunch in advance could save some pennies.

Whether you’re on holiday with little ones or you and your partner are going out for the day, packing a lunch means you can eat whenever you want – and you’re not at the mercy of ridiculous Summer prices.

4. Explore your options

During the Summer holidays, pubs, cafés, restaurants and attractions often offer great discounts and deals for families.

If you want to do something fun but you’re worried about the price, explore your options before heading out. Maybe a local café is offering a “kids eat free” deal? Maybe a nearby museum is free for families during the Summer holidays?

Before you book anything, search for local deals, discounts and promotions. You might be surprised what a little research can uncover when you’re trying to save over the Summer.

5. Set a Summer holiday budget

If you struggle with overspending during the Summer holidays, try setting yourself a budget. This can help you stick to your spending goals throughout the Summer. You could even break it down into categories, such as:

  • Food and drink
  • Living expenses
  • Fun activities
  • Travel expenses

Trust me, your bank account will thank you for it!

Setting a budget is also helpful if you need to know how much you can reasonably spend over the Summer holidays. It can help you feel less stressed about spending when you’re out with your family – and it can also give you chance to stay on top of your outgoings if you’re spending a bit more than usual.
