Gardening is a great way to enjoy a bit of sun this Summer. It’s fun, it’s healthy – and it can be great to check out your lovely creations throughout the year. Gardening with kids can keep them active during the long Summer holidays – and it’s a fun way to entertain little ones of all ages.

In this blog post, I’ve put together 5 tips for gardening with kids, including a few ideas to get your little ones into this fun Summer hobby.

1. Get the right equipment

It’s important to get the right equipment if you’re gardening with kids this Summer. If you’re gardening outside, make sure to get special gardening tools for kids. These tools are safer, meaning little ones can help you without hurting themselves.

If you only have normal gardening tools, such as trowels or rakes, make sure you supervise your little ones every step of the way. It’s good to give kids a bit of independence and responsibility, but you need to prioritise safety.

If you’re gardening outside, you also need to think about any sun protection you might need, like a sun hat and suncream.

2. Get creative!

If you want to encourage little ones to get into gardening this Summer, it’s important to get creative! You could decorate plant pots, let your kids choose their favourite plants or make it into a fun game.

You don’t want to set a lot of rules and restrictions when gardening with your kids. Let your little ones express themselves in your garden space to encourage them to enjoy this fun, budget-friendly Summer activity.

3. Grow your own fruit and veg

Growing your own fruit and veg can get kids involved in the gardening and cooking process. You can show your kids how food gets on their plates and you can also teach your little ones how to stay healthy.

There are so many fruits and vegetables for you and your kids to try out, including courgettes, carrots, coriander, cucumbers, tomatoes or green beans. You can even grow some of these plants on your windowsill if you don’t have an outdoor garden space.

4. Choose quick wins

If you’re gardening with kids, it’s a good idea to choose quick wins. This will help kids see their progress – and it will give little ones a great sense of achievement as soon as possible.

There are lots of fast-growing options for your indoor or outdoor garden, including cress, radishes and sweet peas.

Indoor plants like cress don’t require a lot of care, and you can even grow cress seeds using cotton wool if you don’t have any soil. This makes it a great option for little ones, particularly if you’re gardening with young children.

5. Enjoy wildlife

If you want to get your kids into gardening this Summer, why not try bringing wildlife to your garden? You could make a birdfeeder with your little ones or plant lots of wildflowers to attract bees.

Your kids will love watching as the garden becomes a hive of activity for local wildlife, including bugs, birds, squirrels and more. This is also a great way to look after the environment, as diverse garden ecosystems can produce more oxygen – and they give a wide range of animals the chance to thrive and pollinate.
