I love visiting my local library, and I’ve spent many happy weekends at the library with my friends and family. When my daughter was little, I used to take her for a read, and we would browse books together for hours.

Most cities and towns have a local library system.  This might be just one small library or several big libraries, depending on the size of your local area. Many major cities have a few big libraries, all of them full of old and new books to try out.

If you live in a University city, there are often options for local residents to use student libraries too. You might be surprised about the options in your local area when it comes to finding new books for your reading list!

Although libraries can be a bit traditional or old-fashioned, many local library systems have now created more modern ways for younger users to get involved. For example, some libraries have created their own app. This means you can order books online, reserve your next read or renew your book without phoning the library or going into a branch.

In this blog post, I’ve put together just a few reasons why you should visit your local library this Autumn!

It’s free!

One of the main reasons to visit your local library is the fact that it’s free!

The library only charges you if you don’t bring a book back on time- and you can renew your book a few times if you’re having trouble finishing it. Some libraries have even stopped charging fines since the pandemic.

This means you can borrow lots of different books- all for free. This includes children’s books, bestsellers, classics, non-fiction, contemporary fiction and more. If you fancy trying a book but you don’t want to buy it, try borrowing it from your local library. This gives you the chance to read as many books as you want without spending any money at all.

Unlimited reading options

Your local library gives you lots of reading options, with big libraries providing unlimited reading options for local residents. Obviously, some local libraries might be smaller than others, but there are still plenty of reading options for you to try out.

If you’re an avid reader like me, you might find that you race through books at a fast pace. By visiting your local library, you’ll get the chance to pick up a new book as soon as you’ve finished the last one, or even try a book that you’ve never read before.

You can read an unlimited number of books at your local library, including lots of different genres. From dating advice to brand new fiction, there’s something for everyone!

Keep warm

With the recent rise in energy prices, the library is the perfect place to visit for the day this Autumn. Most libraries are open at the weekends, giving you and your family the chance to spend a few hours in a fun, warm and free environment.

Some libraries also have activities for kids, including craft days or readings. You could check out the schedule for your local library and take your kids along for a bit of free entertainment in the school holidays or on the weekends.

Many local libraries also have a café or a space for kids to play, meaning you and your family can keep warm during the Autumn months and enjoy your spare time.

Rest and relax

Your local library is a fantastic place to rest and relax. Even if you don’t fancy getting out a few new books, a library is a lovely place to just sit and relax. You could go along with your loved ones to enjoy a bit of family time, or head out on your own for a bit of relaxation.

There’s just something about being surrounded by books and quiet softness that can help you to de-stress.
