What I Have Read July – September

Over the last few months I haven’t read as much as I would have liked to. I am trying to rectify that. In the evenings, I am going to bed slightly earlier so that I can read a few chapters before I go to sleep. This has also helped me to sleep a bit better as I am switching off from my laptop and phone earlier. If I continue to do this I will be through my to read pile in no time at all!

As well as reading books before bed I have also read a couple of issues of Women’s Health magazine. I am always looking for new workout ideas and fitness articles in general. As weird as it sounds, buying the magazine is a little treat to myself each month.

At the moment I am really into thrillers and crime stories. I love reading a books that keep me guessing as to what is going to happen. Even in detective books where you kind of know who the killer is, I love seeing how the detectives find their man/woman. Real life crime is something that also interests me. I read a few magazines about this too, not sure if that makes me weirder or not lol.

Onto what I have read over the last few months

I see you – Clare Mackintosh

I went to the library to look for a book by C.L.Taylor, but couldn’t find it and ended up coming home with this instead. And I am glad I did.

One day Zoe Walker sees her picture in the classified ads of a local newspaper. Her family think it’s just someone that looks like her. Everyday new photos of different women appear and Zoe starts to feel very uneasy and wonders who is watching her and why.

I took this to the beach with me on day in the summer and read a massive chunk of it sat on the sand. I was so immersed I didn’t realise how long I had been there. The story had me gripped and just when I thought I had things worked out, it all changed. I didn’t see the twist at the end coming at all which made it impact on me even more.

This book is brilliantly  written. Drawing the reader in and taking them on a rollercoaster ride ending with a twist that will leave the heart racing

Perfect Death ( A D.I. Callanach Thriller) – Helen Fields

I picked this up at the beginning of the yeah, but have only just gotten round to reading it. When I bought it I didn’t realise it was part of a series. That wasn’t a problem though, the book tells you enough about the characters and back story that it doesn’t matter, you can read it as a stand alone story.

There is a killer who is poisoning his victims. They are unaware of what is going on until it is too late. How do you catch a killer who is keeping himself hidden? And how do you work out who is next? D.I. Callanach and D.C.I. Ava Turner have an impossible case to solve.

I knew reasonably early on who was responsible for the crimes, but the how and why eluded me. I loved following the police in their race to find the killer. Personally I thought the book was more about Ava Turner than Callanach. She is a strong character and showed that women can make the tough decisions and be very independent.

This was a great book, I am going to get the previous two books and the new one that follows this at some point. If they are anything like this I will definitely enjoy them

Into The Water – Paula Hawkins

I saw a few bloggers and Instagramers rave about this book, so decided to take a chance on it.

Jules ignores a call from her estranged sister Nell, days later Nell is dead after falling from a cliff. The police think it is suicide, but Jules knows Nell would never have jumped. Now Jules most go to her sister’s house and look after her daughter and find out what really happened to Nell.

I found this book so hard to put down, more than once I was up much later than intended. All the character’s in the book have secrets, and untangling them all helps to find out what really happened to Nell. The book is brilliantly written and I can see why it has been so successful. I really felt like I was there and feeling what Jules and the others were feeling. Yet an another author I want to read more of, this is a must read book.

So that is what I have been reading. Have you read anything good lately? I would love to hear your recommendations.
