A practical guide to mindfulness

There are lots of ways to stay mindful. In this blog post, I want to create a practical guide to mindfulness. I’ve put together 5 clear and actionable steps to start your mindfulness journey in 2024.

Step 1: Choose a mindful space

First things first, choosing a mindful space can help you get into the right frame of mind. This is the place where you’ll practice your mindful activities, such as meditation or mindful breathing.

Your mindful space could be anywhere! For many, the bedroom is a relaxing space. Whether you share your room with someone else or not, a bedroom is a great place to rest, relax and take time to get into the present moment.

Step 2: Make the time

Practising mindfulness doesn’t need to take up your whole day. It’s about making the time when you can. You might choose to practice mindful breathing first thing in the morning, for example, or take time to fill out your gratitude journal before going to sleep.

It’s important to make mindfulness a habit. If you can, choose to practice mindfulness at the same time every day – and create a reminder for yourself until you’ve successfully implemented it into your regular routine.

Step 3: Act mindfully

As well as making time for mindfulness, there are lots of regular activities that you can complete consciously. It’s so easy to rush around when there are things to get done. However, treating your to-do list mindfully can help you stay in the present moment, even when you’re just going about your day.

There are lots of daily tasks that you can do mindfully, including:

Take the time to focus on the task at hand. This will give you special, practical and mindful moments throughout the day.

Step 4: Practice mindful breathing

If you’re unsure how to get into mindfulness, breathing is a great place to start. There are lots of different mindful breathing techniques. Take a minute to focus on your breathing. This can help you relax if you’re feeling stressed and bring you back into the present moment.

Mindful breathing is something you can do at any time of day. If you’re worried about a deadline at work or you’re nervous about making a big presentation, take a second to breathe. You can also practice mindful breathing when nothing is wrong. Get into the habit of focusing your breathing to stay present.

Step 5: Exercise

Exercise is a practical way to stay mindful in 2024. You could try out mindful stretching. As you stretch, take note of how you’re feeling and connect your mind and body.

This is a simple but effective way to practice mindfulness without taking too much time out of your day. It might not work for everyone, but finding an activity that helps you focus on your body – and takes you out of your head – is a practical way to introduce mindfulness into your routine.
